Dare to Lead
One of my favorite places to ponder anything is my backyard. It is a tranquil place with a beautiful waterfall my wonderful husband made. I sit under the grape arbor on the couch wrapped up in a blanket with a glass of wine.
This past month, I flipped through my notes in Dare to Lead by Brene Brown as I faced a pivotal time in my business. Brene has a philosophy and vocabulary that helps me clarify issues.
She and my bottle of red helped me confirm servant leadership is the best approach to leading a non-profit. What I RE-discovered is when a mission is about serving others, the best approach is a servant approach. I have been serving as a community advocate for over 30 years. I’m just glad I figured it out sooner than later. I mean it only took me half a century. Laugh out loud with me!
When I connect with readers and customers, I am strengthened and assured of the decision to create a community hub offering goods and services to empower others wanting to empower themselves. My initial business, The Evolving Company, began with me encouraging others to know who they are meant to be. It also involved me sharing my love of repurposing. At the store, I often say we are giving items a second chance as well as people a second chance.
Daring to lead is hard but not without rewards. This infusion of two businesses is a daring adventure of responsibility for me. I embrace it wholeheartedly because it infuses two of my passions. My love of repurposing items and compassion for others. These activities in my life keep both items and people out of the dump(s). I had to add a little humor so you would know it is me writing!

Perfectionism vs Procrastination v3
“Strive for persistence rather than perfection in my journey in this life.”
I dubbed myself The Evolving Mother because I want to continually be learning. There are many reasons why. The one for this writing is as we learn we are smarter and make better decisions.
I read my version one of this blog and cringe, just a little, at some of my word choices and phrases. The cringe comes with a huge pat on the back too. Because I wrote it and PUBLISHED IT! YAY ME!
I could keep all versions of my writings in a file or I can choose to evolve. It has been so worth it. Visit my Evolutionary Designs store to see!
Writing this version confirms my excitement to be an evolutionary encourager! Ok. I will not be making any t-shirts with a big ‘e’ on the front and wear a big red cape. I will continue to keep putting one foot in front of the other as I make my way down this beautiful path I am traveling.
You may be wondering why I haven’t mentioned any of the challenges I’ve had in June. As I wrote in the forward of this email, it is all about perspective. If I don’t practice what I preach, I become obsolete. Integrity has become even more important to me. The bookends Perfectionism and Procrastination are opposites. Life happens within the books of these two. I have written this blog and caught up on many tasks while I recover from having had covid. It is persistent but then again so am I.
This is one reason why I considered changing the title of this blog series to perfection vs persistence. Pondering is a good thing too as it is part of the process. Peter would agree. Wink. Wink. Persistence is putting one foot in front of the other, even if you are a little nervous. Life happens and we cannot even try to control every aspect. Allow the plan to adjust as long as you stay focused on the objective. Take a deep breath and remember to evolve. –The Evolving Mother

I FAILED
It is an attention getter more than an admission. These words are negative and I try not to use them. I forgot to write any blogs last month which is failing to do something. Subscribers were kind and did not call me out. Thank you.
What is important from this incident is my attitude. How I respond. As in most cases in life, how we react to a situation determines the successful. Will we evolve into a better person and thrive or will we continue to make the same mistake.
So here I am one month later putting fingers to keyboard. I pause as I realize I cannot write ‘putting pen to paper’ because I am not. I leave that for journaling as it is more meditative. And this, ironically, I have continued to do.
I knew this writing would be about letting things get out of hand. Sometimes we call it chaos but I didn't feel chaotic. The topic I kept repeating was ‘good is done’. Everything doesn’t have to be perfect. And then I remembered what my very first blog was about. Procrastination vs Perfection. Ugh!
The reality is that I was so caught up in the resale store I opened and adoring my grandson, both occurred last fall. I am sad that I didn’t carry through with my obligation. What I learned though is to evaluate my commitment to better fit into my new life. I was trying to continue the same routine with new responsibilities added to my plate. The pants were NOT having it!
To my blog’s demise, I was enjoying myself. All was not bad. Did I mention my grandson? He is so stinking cute! He is starting to babble and giggle. Soon he will be saying grandma. I digress. Which is what I was doing last month.
So here you are. The good-is-done blog. I am celebrating the consistent writing I have done rather than dwell on the error of missing one. Here's to evolving...so we can thrive!

I WILL SUCCEED
In fulfilling my new year’s resolution? Well only if I make one.
A resolution seems a lot harder this year. Sure. I knew each depended on my actions. What I didn’t know was how much grace I gave myself in years past.
This year will take a bit more reading Dr. Suess books since I am low on patience and positivity.
His words that speak to me today, “We are all a little weird and life’s a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love.”
THIS is how I will spend 2022. With the family and friends that can handle my weirdness.
I’m stepping out in faith this year as I feel weirder than anyone really thinks I am.

I am writing a book. OK. So what’s so weird or extraordinary about this?
Courage. Being courageous enough to step into the person I think I am meant to be.
Dr. Suess thinks I can succeed, ‘and I WILL SUCCEED, Yes! I will, indeed! 98 and ¾ percent guaranteed! It’s that 1 and ¼ percent that is holding me back.
And THAT my friends is what the book is about. Waiting on Perfection.
I waited until the second day of the year to post my resolution until my proofreader could edit my work. Actually, I waited until the second day of the year so that I could have one day of perfection. HA!
This may be the first time, indeed for me, to know what my goal will be for 2023.
Do not spoil my milk, pop my bubble, or fuel that 1 and ¼ percent by writing a message reminding me this is called goal setting. For once, I am able to take courage by the hand and dance and sing at the same time.
Here is a sneak-peak from the book.
May you dance and sing this year if only in your home because you don’t have to wear your mask there!!

EAT, DRINK, & BE MUNIFICENT
Tis the season to be merry. Only I changed the word to munificent. It means giving. This is the time of year to give right? Many of us give all year of our time and talent and when able, our tender, as in money.
Each day during this holiday season there seems to be a title with a cause asking you to spend your money. Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday, etc.
The munificent day for me this year is December 12th. It is an afternoon holiday event for the resale boutique I opened to raise funds and awareness for three organizations dear to my heart. For over 30 years, I have been an advocate educating about special needs of people in our community.

BLESSINGS ABOUND
For once I am unable to put words on paper because of the joy in my life.
My heart is full and so is my calendar. And while it has typically been filled with one thing or another, this past month was beautiful like a pile of autumn leaves.
I became a grandmother for the first time to a beautiful baby boy, and I opened a resale shop for my non-profit. Neither of these are my possessions but I have great passion for both. The many adventures I plan to have with my grandson and the advocacy for Resources In Support of Empowerment-TheRiseConcept.Org.
My purpose has become clear. The thirty years of advocacy for military families and education and community service has finally culminated into The Rise Resale Shop. The Evolving Company will initially donate 2% a month of sales to the non-profit.
Thank you for being on this journey with me as I write the next chapter of my life. May you take time to count the blessings in your life and find joy! -The Evolving Mother

Enoy! Toilet! Smell!
Made ya look..so sayeth the genie from the movie Aladdin. Would you enjoy cleaning your toilet more if the cleaner didn’t stink? Come on. You’ve got to be laughing by now or holding your nose.
As this evolving mother cleaned the toilet this morning, I had a remarkable discovery. Toilet’s are dirty, DUH! But…pun intended, the different this cleaning session was the lack of odor. If you are still reading this very unusual message, I will let you in on why. Afterall, you deserve it! 💩
First, I used a new cleaner and secondly, I don’t wait too long between cleanings. Now you can let go of your nose, because this cleaner I used has NO bleach, ammonia, formaldehyde, phthalates, or parabens. It cleaned the toilet with no work at all. Ok. I did have to spray and wipe.

THE THREE MUSKATEERS
What came to mind, the candy bar or the people? I think of the candy because it is one of my favorite candy bars. Being older and wiser, I have replaced that sweet delicious yumminess ooey gooey nougat. Come back. Come back!
This is just what I am writing about today. Our thoughts! They can get us into trouble or help us get stuff done. As I work to accomplish my goal, my thoughts have to be intentional. Napolean Hill wrote, ‘Everything which man creates begins in the form of a thought.’ The three M’s that I focus on are motivation and momentum with the leader being mindset. I highly encourage you to read Mr. Hill’s book, Think and Grow Rich, or a more current one by Sharon Lechter with the same title only written for women.
My thoughts have been assembled into a plan to achieve a goal. At one point, however, I became overwhelmed by my thoughts. It’s a good thing I allow myself to write in certain books. I picked up Sharon’s book and read the dog-eared page on autosuggestion. This reminded me to FOCUS on the three M’s and down it with a big glass of faith. MMMMMM. That was delicious!
Faith comes from practicing what you know works. (Next blog on that!) For now, remember thoughts lead to action. As you determine your focus, start with one step at a time. RIGHT?! The Balancing Act
As I get older, it is harder to balance life. I tie my sneakers while I am standing up, then, find myself leaning against the most stable item next to me. It’s my feelings that get hurt more than the muscle I leaned on. If feelings are intangible, why do they hurt so much?
This topic kept creeping into my mind while on vacation. I left town one week after a huge fundraiser I organized. You would think that would be enough time to tie up the loose ends and pack. No. I found myself leaning against a tree 9,000 feet above sea level.
It was then, as I was catching my breath, that I discovered I am no longer fit. I am not like the Olympians that train at these high altitudes. I did recall, I have a notion for the Survival of the Fittest, in this former blog. Read here.

This topic kept creeping into my mind while on vacation. I left town one week after a huge fundraiser I organized. You would think that would be enough time to tie up the loose ends and pack. No. I found myself leaning against a tree 9,000 feet above sea level.
